We’ve all been told how dangerous drunk driving can be, but people continue to get behind the wheel after too many drinks, putting their lives and the lives of those around them in danger.

In an effort to gain a deeper understanding of the DUI landscape, we explored the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System and uncovered less commonly known insights based on the data behind drunk driving.

One of the most shocking discoveries was how high the highest recorded BACs (blood alcohol concentrations) are – and how many alcoholic beverages people drink to reach those BACs. Below is a map of the top BAC recorded in a fatal car accident for each state, and the map underneath reveals approximately how many shots it takes to get to that point.

When you keep in mind that the legal limit is 0.08, these numbers are even more startling and provide a preliminary glimpse at how many highly intoxicated people have been on the roads. To explore our other findings, take a look at the infographic below.
